Much More On The Menu Than The Name Indicates, Awesome Wings & Daily Specials

By: Jeff Walker, Business Review

After spending the better part of his adult life in the military and law enforcement, Mike Justice decided to follow one of his passions, pursuing a career in food and beverage. Initially beginning his newfound calling in Charlotte, Justice moved to greater Charleston some years later opening the Public House in Oakbrook of Summerville, before scaling back to Holy Cow Burgers & Brew on Dorchester near the Walmart.

While his past attempts didn’t thrive mainly due to location, his third attempt at a specialized menu did find favor with burger lovers, with just the smaller venue on Dorchester his main drawback. Determined Justice kept looking the the ideal place, when a venue in Mixson near Park Circle in North Charleston became available, he knew it was time to relocate Holy Cow Burgers & Brew to the ever growing restaurant community.

Situated at 4399 McCarthy St. in Mixson, a stones throw from Rivers and a half mile from Park Circle off Durant Ave, the new and larger location allowed Justice to add favorable everyday foods, and an expanded beer menu to the bill of fare. Although the pandemic didn’t help his 2020 opening, the adjacent private outdoor pool and recreation area provided steady business, especially during the summer months.

With burgers and brew in the title of your restaurant, you better believe Justice serves up a variety of each. Alongside the even dozen signature burgers that are created with 100% Waygu beef from Fossil Farms, are three wannabee burgers, aka the Confused Cow (6oz beer battered chicken breast), the Cowfish (6oz beer battered cod), and the Skinny Cow (no beef or turkey based).

While vegans have several options, Holy Cow is a carnivore lovers paradise, with their namesake burger the most popular of the all beef selections on the menu. The Holy Cow is not for the faint of heart or for those who eat light. Suffice to say it’s a colossal burger that incorporates items from breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

An eight ounce burger stacked high with pork, brisket, bacon, egg, and fries, smothered in pico de gallo, Carolina slaw, chipotle ranch aioli (spicy mayo), and cheese sauce, topped with homemade chili. You have to crank your jaw open a few notches to wrap your mouth around the Holy Cow, or use a knife and fork to dissect every meaty morsel. In between bites enjoy the hand cut fries that superbly complement the entree.

All the burger selections pay tribute to the all mighty cow, and begin with an eight ounce fresh Waygu patty. The Southern Cow is destined to become a low country favorite, topped with pimento cheese on Texas toast. The Western Cow comes complete with bacon, sliced avocado, and onion rings, slathered in BBQ sauce, and drizzling with sour cream. It’s an upscale west coast thing. Totally awesome!

Not to outdone, the Philly Cow adds sauteed steak, peppers, and onions on top the burger and comes topped with Mike’s own homemade cheese sauce. Perhaps you’re looking for an ideal burger to go with a cold brew. The Drunken Cow is Mike’s own chili cheeseburger drenched in beer cheese and bacon. More like a two beer burger to me.

Let’s talk about the brews. Holy Cow keeps 10 ice cold beers on tap, with another 60 or more available in can or bottle. Mike likes to mix it up with lagers, ales, and IPA’s among the fray, with many brews from local and regional breweries.

Lest you think burgers are all Holy Cow has to offer, think again! By far one of the most popular menu items are their wings. Whether you order dry or wet, they are plump and succulent, as if they came from the fattest of chickens. All your favorite flavors including lemon pepper, Cajun mesquite, garlic parmesan, Thai chili, and teriyaki.

Get them mild, hot, or five alarm with ranch or bleu cheese dressing. Dropping in by yourself, get six for $7. Coming in with your buddies, order 25 for just $25. Great with a cold brewski. Several salads, wraps, and crowd pleasing starters round out the edible menu, including fried pickles, potato skins, a southwest chicken roll, and Mike’s signature Mixon Shrimp, blended with scallions and their special sauce.

Hand held delights, cold beer, and other delectable mixed concoctions, Holy Cow Burgers & Brew offer up a plethora of food and drink, sure to delight everyone in your family or group. All the burgers range from $12 – $14. Considering they are handcrafted using Waygu beef, that’s a damn good price.

But wait there’s more. Why spend that much on the little ones. Holy Cow has a four kids meals featuring the four favs (burger, grilled cheese, mac n’ cheese bites, chicken fingers) priced at $5.99, including fries and a drink. Salads start at $5, with wraps and appetizers $7 – $10. Like I often say, everyday food priced right is always appetizing.

Have I whet your appetite? That was the plan. The one thing you won’t be complaining about when you dine at Holy Cow is ‘where’s the beef!’ Hearty appetites always welcome. All this in a laid back modern industrial environment setting, an ideal complement to the Mixson community. Open daily 11-11pm. Daily lunch specials and takeout available, as well as delivery from GrubHub and DoorDash.
