Four Famous Athletes From Charleston

Published

on

Charleston is a place renowned for its sporting prowess, with the Clemson Tigers having won 25 conference titles throughout their history. That dominance was on full display between 2015 and 2019 as the Tigers won five straight ACC championships. However, which sporting superstars were born in Charleston and how much success have they found throughout their career?

Beth Daniel

It isn’t all about basketball and American Football in Charleston, and Beth Daniel is an example of that. Daniel achieved huge success throughout her golf career, as she won 33 LPGA Tour events. However, the one tournament that stands out most is the one major success that she managed in her career. That success came in 1990 as she won the Mazda LPGA Championship by one stroke from Rosie Jones. Her legacy remains to this day as she paved the way for future women golfers to follow in her footsteps. Her success was recognised when she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000.

Ovie Mughelli

Ovie Mughelli is one of the many American Footballers that began their career in Charleston, as he was drafted in Round 4 of the 2003 draft from Wake Forest. Mughelli was picked by the Baltimore Ravens, where he went on to play for three years. After that stay, he would move to the Atlanta Falcons in 2007, where he played until 2011. During his time with the Falcons, he played in the Pro Bowl in 2010. Also, he was a two-time Second-team All-Pro during his eight-year career in the NFL. Mughelli scored seven touchdowns during his career and completed 120 rushing yards.

Josh Powell

Josh Powell is an excellent example that you should never give up on your dreams, as he made the NBA the hard way after being undrafted during the 2003 draft. He moved to Lokomotiv-Rostov and Juve-Caserta Basket, before finally getting his big break in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. He was an important player for the team through the NBA Finals, but they were ultimately beaten by the Miami Heat. However, he would finally become an NBA champion four years later. He spent two years with the Los Angeles Lakers between 2008 and 2010, where he won the championship in both seasons.

Khris Middleton

One of the finest players in the NBA at present was also born in Charleston. Khris Middleton went to Porter-Gaud high school before going to college at Texas A&M. In 2012, he was picked by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the draft.

One year later and he was on the move again, as he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Middleton has been a vital player in the Bucks throughout his career at the franchise, and he has played in two All-Star games. His performances have ensured that the Bucks are constantly among the favourites in the betting with Unibet NJ for the Eastern Conference Championship. He was in the form of his career last season, as he was averaging 20.9 points in the regular season for the Bucks, and 20.3 points in the post-season.
