A coalition of over 60 Lowcountry educators called “Teachers for Sam Skardon” endorsed Skardon, the Democratic nominee for State Senate District 41, on Thursday. Members of the group include many District 41 teachers and educators.

“Sam is a product of Charleston County public schools and has a clear vision for the future improving them,” said Teachers for Sam Skardon spokesperson Patrick Martin. “Our public education system is on the ballot in 2020, and teachers are excited about leaders like Sam. He will work with students, teachers, and families to forge policies and pass legislation that will empower our students and improve our schools.”

“I am honored to have the support of so many hard working educators,” said Skardon. “South Carolina and District 41 needs leaders who will fight for public education. We need to set a goal of South Carolina being a national leader in public education. We can get there by recruiting and retaining great teachers, implementing universal pre-K, and addressing the disparities in our school system. I look forward to bringing that vision for progress to Columbia.”

The South Carolina Education Association, Summerville Education Association, and the Charleston County Education Association all recommended Skardon for District 41.

District 41 covers portions of James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, North Charleston, and Summerville. In 2018, Democratic gubernatorial candidate James Smith received 53% of the vote in the district, and current U.S. Congressman Joe Cunningham received 57%.
