Irv Batten, Executive Director of the Cooper River Bridge Run (CRBR), has announced that the official artwork unveiling for the 44th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run 10K will take place on Saturday, March, 27, 2021. Unveiled via a social media video, this year’s design contest winner, Joseph (Joe) Wilhite, is the first two-time winner in history.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful scenery driving into Mount Pleasant, Joe included the monarch butterfly as a symbol of hope, alongside South Carolina’s state flower, the yellow jasmine, and a symbol of the South, the white magnolia. The date – drawn in concrete – is Wilhite’s subtle nod to hopefully not having to reschedule the race due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are so humbled by all of the artwork that we received this year,” Batten said. “Joseph’s piece really captured the optimism we have for this year’s race. Despite a difficult year, we are eager for a great race ahead.”

Wilhite’s artwork will be featured on all 2021 event t-shirts, posters and marketing materials for the third largest 10K in the country. He has also been awarded a $1,000 cash prize.

“2020 was a pretty rough year for everyone,” said Wilhite. “COVID-19 affected my life just as it affected everyone else’s, and I wanted to inspire a little bit of hope. Winning two times in a row is something I couldn’t even imagine. I went with a different style this year to try something new and it paid off.”

The CRBR Design Contest is an annual tradition that encourages artists from across the country to submit their artwork for consideration. This year’s contest featured more than 30 designs from artists of all ages and regions. A piece created by Megan Kincaid was chosen as this year’s “People’s Choice” winner and moved on to the top 10 judging round. Four previous winners entered artwork into this year’s contest and Wilhite became the first two-time winner in CRBR history.
