Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy Announces 2020 Awards and 2021 Appointments

Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy is honored to announce the 2020 Award Recipients and new 2021 Appointments.

On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, through the hospitality of Rev. Spike Coleman of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church (712 Wappo Road, Charleston, SC 29407), members of Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy gathered for an evening of socially distanced fellowship and recognition.

Chief Reggie Burgess with the North Charleston Police Department addressed the audience as the Keynote Speaker. Amaris Jenkins sang the National Anthem. 2019 Latin Grammy Nominee Chaplain Gaby Soto sang, accompanied by Chaplain Luciano Soto on piano.

Chief Reginald L. Burgess of the North Charleston Police Department and C. Chad Wiggins were inducted as new Board members.

Chaplain Barbara Pendergrast and Chaplain Bonnie Torrence were appointed as Crisis Chaplains – serving survivors on the scene of homicides, suicides, fire/traffic fatalities and other traumatic losses.

Mission Award: Chaplain Imam Bourious El-Idrissi

Chaplain Bourious El-Idrissi for exemplifying the spirit of the Chaplaincy, through furthering Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy’s heart for interreligious dialogue and ministry, serving the community with deep sensitivity in times of need, supporting first responders through routine station visits, and teaching us what it means to be intentional about connecting and caring for one another.

Business of the Year: Landmark Construction

This year Landmark Construction, under the leadership of Rick Mixson, was awarded The Business of the Year Award. Landmark Construction has responded to our community’s need to offer support to first responders and survivors of traumatic loss. Rick Mixson is a key leader in making the Annual Lowcountry Bottom Fishing Rodeo to benefit Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy a success and shares his expertise as a board member, guiding strategic planning for Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy.

Community Impact Award: Summerville Police Department, under the direction of Chief Jon Rogers and Deputy Chief Douglas Wright

This year Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy recognizes the Summerville Police Department, an agency that has taken a bold step in professionalism through community policing. They heard the call of their community for deeper conversation and worked with Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy to develop a project engaging in dedicated collaboration between community and police. The Summerville Police Department has spent the time listening, being vulnerable to constructive criticism, and taking the initiative to collaborate with community members through investing in relationships, empathy, education, and engagement, through the Summerville Dignity Project.

Board of Directors Award: J. Michael Cole

Michael Cole was awarded The Board of Directors Award for 2020. The Board of Directors Award recognizes Michael’s tireless dedication to mission and ministry of Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, demonstrated through his dedication to the mission, work to build the organization, and exceptional support of chaplains, volunteers, and staff.

Rookie Chaplain of the Year: Barbara Pendergradst

The Rookie Chaplain of the Year award recognizes a new chaplain who has demonstrated an exceptional grasp of the mission and ministry of the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, demonstrated through active involvement with The Chaplaincy. Chaplain Barbara instantly became a part of the Chaplaincy family and spirit. She is a consistent source of encouragement to others, has a wonderful heart for community and crisis ministries, a talent for articulating our calling, and a gift for being present in the moment when serving others.

Survivor Care Team Member of the Year: Emily and Clayton Burrous

The Survivor Care Team Member of the Year Award recognizes a team member who has demonstrated an exceptional ministry, bringing the light and dope into the darkness of grief, visiting survivors who have experienced the most traumatic of losses. This year Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy recognized two volunteers, Emily and Clayton Burrous, who have been dedicated to the Survivor Care Team for many years. They set an example in consistently serving on cases, reporting online, and serving humbly with great compassion to our survivors.

Chaplain of the Year: Chaplain Dale Norman

The Chaplain of the Year Award recognizes a chaplain who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the mission and ministry of the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, through a sacrificial ministry that consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. Chaplain Dale has been a shining example of mission and ministry, demonstrating true service and humility. He consistently serves throughout the pandemic and has embodies the professionalism of crisis ministry. Through station visits, crisis callouts, duty chaplain shifts, training new chaplains, managing the Crisis Chaplain shift scheduling, and multiple leadership tasks. Dale is a shining beacon of light and hope to everyone he encounters.
