Programming

Art of Design Luncheon and Lecture, Travel Raffle, March 5

The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to announce Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder and CEO of boutique travel planning company Indagare, as the featured speaker of the 11th annual Art of Design, to be held virtually on Friday, March 5. Since 2011, the Gibbes’ Women’s Council has hosted renowned experts at the annual luncheon and lecture. This year, Melissa will discuss the subject of travel in today’s world, especially as the industry grapples with unprecedented issues of safety and cost. Due to current COVID-19 guidance, all general admission tickets will be for live-stream access only. A limited number of sponsors will have the opportunity to join the event in-person, in the Gibbes’ Lenhardt Garden. Guests can purchase a $50 ticket to stream the lecture. The Women’s Council and Indagare will also be raffling off a trip for two, valued at $20,000, to support the museum. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $100.

Museums on Us Weekend, March 6

The Bank of America Museums on Us program offers free admission to more than 220 cultural institutions nationwide during the first full weekend of every month, and the Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to be a continuing partner in this program. This promotion offers one free general admission to each cardholder who presents a Bank of America, Merrill or Bank of America Private Bank (US Trust) credit or debit card along with photo ID. This offer is not transferable and cannot be combined with other offers. This offer also excludes fundraising events, special exhibitions and ticketed exhibitions.

Depth of Field: Queering Glamour in Interwar Fashion Photography, March 10

Inspired by the special exhibition In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Photography this virtual lecture by a professor of history at the University of Toronto, Elspeth H. Brown, offers queer histories of capitalism and interwar glamour through an analysis of George Platt Lynes’s photographic work. The event is part of a three-part lecture series where scholars from across the country will put contributions of the lensmen and lenswomen who defined photography in the 20^th century into bold new contexts. The event will take place on Zoom and registrants will receive the link one day before the event.

Film Photography and Darkroom Development with J. Kevin Foltz, March 13, 14, 20 & 21

Artist J. Kevin Foltz with Redux Contemporary Art Center is collaborating with the Gibbes for this two-weekend workshop where participants will have a full experience of film photography including taking photos, processing film, making prints and a guided tour of the Gibbes photography exhibition In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Photography. Film, chemicals, photographic paper and other materials will be provided and COVID-19 safety measures will be in place.

Creating Characters and Designs: Illustration Workshop with Clare Pernice for ages 8-11, March 13

Young artists will learn about creating characters and stories while developing their own unique illustration style in this in-person workshop. At the end of the workshop, students will have experienced drawing different characters and mini story ideas. All materials are included and COVID-19 safety measures will be in place to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff members.

How to Take Pictures on Your Smartphone with Joyce Weir, March 13

Photographer and tour guide, Joyce Weir will share tips and techniques on how to take great images with smartphones. The class will begin at the Gibbes Museum in a classroom and then move into a walking tour of the neighborhoods surrounding the Museum.

Illustration Workshop for Adults: Making a Book Dummy, March 13

Professional storybook illustrator Clare Pernice will demonstrate illustration techniques and the design process involved in creating a picture book. This session will focus on creating a book dummy to learn about page turns and layout decisions and discuss the use of different art materials, design considerations and working in the business of publishing.

Literary Gibbes: A Book Club Discussion, March 19

The Gibbes Museum of Art invites visitors to join them for a virtual book-club-style discussion via Zoom in collaboration with Charleston County Public Library. Inspired by the current special exhibition at the Gibbes, In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Society, this discussion will focus on Susan Sontag’s book “On Photography” which is a progress of essays about the meaning and career of photography. Registrants will receive the Zoom link one day before the event.

Saturday Morning Art Camp for ages 7-10: Women in Art, March 20

Visitors are invited to join teaching artist Janell Walker Smalls in celebrating Women’s History Month with this Saturday Morning Art Camp. Young artists will learn about the lives of three amazing artists; Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo and Minnie Evans. Materials are included and COVID-19 safety measures will be in place.

Fine Arts Professional Development, March 20

Inspired by current exhibitions on view, the Gibbes is excited to offer a series of professional development sessions for K-12 educators. This Zoom meeting hosted by Gibbes teaching artists, Martha Criscuolo will share tips and techniques on how to translate hands-on art activities into virtual lessons. Registrants will receive Zoom information one day before the event.

An Evening with Victoria Wyeth, March 24

Victoria Browning Wyeth, the only grandchild of iconic American painter Andrew Wyeth (1917 – 2009) will give guests a glimpse into the private life and works of her grandfather in this virtual event via Zoom. She will offer a unique and personal perspective on the art of this beloved artist while also sharing family stories, sketches and other seldom-seen works.

Gibbes Film in Focus: A Streetcar Named Desire, March 25

Gibbes Film in Focus is a three-part pilot film series that will expand the Museum’s diverse array of educational programming to include filmmaking, offering a safe place to watch great movies in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. To use film as an entry point for engaging people in the power of art and storytelling, the series will also promote culturally significant works by women filmmakers and filmmakers of color. Adapted from Tennessee William’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 play of the same name, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” directed by Elia Kazan tells the story of a southern belle, Blanche DuBois, after encountering a series of personal losses, leaves her aristocratic background seeking refuge with her sister and brother-in-law in a dilapidated New Orleans apartment building.

Illustration Workshop for Adults: Jacket Design and Final Touches, March 27

Professional storybook illustrator Clare Pernice will demonstrate illustration techniques and the design process involved in creating a picture book. This session will focus on book jacket design and final touches in the process of creating your own illustrated story.

Ongoing Special Exhibitions

Manning Williams: Reinventing Narrative Painting, Through April 18

Reinventing Narrative Painting is the first major retrospective of Manning Williams’s work since his death in 2012.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by Evening Post Publishing and will travel to the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA. Williams’s paintings are rooted in the history, traditions, and terrain of the South Carolina Lowcountry. A Charleston native and lifelong resident, Williams earned degrees from the College of Charleston and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His highly personal approach to realist painting emphasized storytelling and was fueled by an interest in portraying subjects that he found on the periphery of the city and along the barrier islands. Western subjects also commanded Williams’s attention, and during the later years of his career, his concern with narrative was expressed in a more abstract style. Reinventing Narrative Painting features 30 paintings from Williams’s prolific career that spanned more than 40 years.

In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Photography, Through April 18

Drawn from the Robert Marks Collection, this exhibition features 30 photographs by renowned 20th-century photographers. From Alfred Stieglitz’s intimate composite portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe to Lewis Hine’s depictions of American laborers, modernist-era photographers radically shifted how the human body was captured on film and for what purpose. Employing a variety of techniques from cropping and zooming, to distortion and framing, modernist photographers explored the human figure for social, performative, voyeuristic and documentary purposes. Highlights include the work of Stieglitz, Hine, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, George Platt Lynes and László Moholy-Nagy.

Charleston Collects: Devotion and Fantasy, Witchcraft and the World’s End, Through June 27, 2021

This exhibition is a selection of art curated by Lawrence Goedde, Ph.D., professor of art history at the University of Virginia. The collection, which is comprised of objects created in the Low Countries and Germany between 1440 and 1590, showcases a world of contradictions and unease—whether the subject is a troubled Virgin Mary contemplating her young son, or a menacing group of malevolent figures inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, or Albrecht Dürer’s famous scenes from Revelations.
