Brookgreen Gardens has several happenings to share this May. New for this year, the botanical garden will host a Spring Wine Festival in the gardens where guests can sip on wines surrounded by the beautiful blooms of spring.

World Labyrinth Day International Walk for Peace, May 1

Brookgreen invites visitors to join them at the labyrinth to “walk as 1 at 1” as part of the 13^th annual World Labyrinth Day Walk for Peace. The idea is to become part of a rolling wave of people walking for peace around the globe, each group walking at 1:00 p.m. in their respective time zone.

Price: Included with garden admission

Animal Sculpture with Adam Matano, May 3 – May 7

In this animal sculpture workshop, sculptor Adam Matano will discuss proportion and animal anatomy teaching participants how to create a sculpture of their own. All levels are welcome from the beginner to the expert and the event will be held in the Campbell Center Sculpture Studio.

Price: $650 plus materials fee

The Gullah Geechee Program Series – The Musicology of the Gullah Geechee Culture, May 5, 12, and 19

The now in-person Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture (Part II) will begin on May 5 and run through September. It will feature the themes of tempo and texture while teaching how music is intertwined in the culture and language during interactive presentations on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Auditorium. Reservations can be made by calling 843.235.6049.

Homeschool Programs 2021, May 6, May 7, May 13, May 14, May 20, May 21, May 27, May 28

Brookgreen Gardens’ Homeschool Explorer Program is a themed program designed to offer exciting, hands-on, standard-based lessons about nature, history and art. The program is designed for children and their parents to interact throughout various presentations, stations and fun experiences!

Price: $7 per student – includes one parent/teacher

Sparkling Reception in Live Oak Allee, May 7

Brookgreen is gearing up to host a special evening to celebrate 30 years of its fundraising group, the Friends of Brookgreen. Cocktails, sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the event located in the Live Oak Allee. Proceeds from the event will support the new red wolves exhibit at Brookgreen’s Lowcountry Zoo. A special raffle will be on sale during the event for the chance to win a private reception for 20 guests at the Leonard Pavillion.

Price: $100 reception ticket | $25 raffle ticket

Spring Wine Festival in the Gardens, May 8

Brookgreen invites visitors to attend the inaugural Spring Wine Festival to enjoy wine tastings and live music. Located at Brookgreen’s Huntington Sculpture Gardens, the event is from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the purchase of a wristband includes admission to the event along with 10 wine tasting tickets.

Price: $30 for a wristband *price doesn’t include admission to Brookgreen. Non-members will need to purchase an admission ticket online or at the gate. Additional wine tasting tickets are available for purchase. 

Open Studio, May 12

Bryan Rapp, Brookgreen’s Director of the Master Sculptor Program will host this live monthly event in the Campbell Sculpture Center Studio. He will demonstrate the sculpture-making process and allow time for a Q&A.

Price: Free with garden admission

Workshops for Children and Families, May 15

This workshop for children and their families is located at the Campbell Center Sculpture Studio. Taught by Brookgreen’s Director of the Master Sculptor Program, Bryan Rapp, this workshop’s theme is “light sculptures.”

Price: $10 per child – must be accompanied by an adult

Nature’s Geometry: Sculpting the Figure in Planes with Rick Casali, May 17 – May 21

Under the guidance of renowned sculptor Rick Casali, artists will have the experience of creating life-like figures in this workshop. Topics covered include action, human proportions, geometric planes, gross anatomy and the organic rhythms that tie it all together. All skill levels are welcome from the beginner to the expert.

Price:  $650 plus materials and model’s fees

Weavers and Spinners, May 17

Craft-enthusiasts can learn the basics of knitting and crocheting in this in-person workshop with a group of women fiber artists called the “Lowcountry Spinners.”

Brookgreen 101, May 27

Brookgreen 101 is a public information program offered usually on the fourth Thursdays of the month at 1:00 pm in the Lowcountry Auditorium.  The topics may cover various aspects of Brookgreen Gardens including the collections, property history, people, poetry, art history, corporate history, the founders, and Brookgreen purposes. The event in May is themed around Brookgreen women.

Price: Included with garden admission – advanced registration is required

Ongoing Special Exhibitions:

Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art, until May 23

Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art is the inaugural exhibition in the new Rosen Galleries. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, etchings, lithographs and drawings by great 19th, 20th and 21st-century artists in the fields of botanical and zoological illustration. Sporting art and other fine art depicting the purposes of Brookgreen Gardens—sculpture, plants, animals and history—are also included in this exhibition.
