Best Day Trips In South Carolina

Published

on

South Carolina is arguably one of the most picturesque states in the U.S. It is undoubtedly among the most popular in the Southeast, with plenty of fascinating natural and human-made attractions. If you live close by or are planning to visit the area sometime soon, here are some suggestions for some truly rewarding day trips you can enjoy:

Glencairn Gardens

Glencairn Gardens started out as a backyard garden built by David and Hazel Bigger in 1928. From its humble beginnings, it has grown into one of South Carolina’s most impressive attractions. Located in the town center, it covers an expansive 4.5-hectare land area, with fascinating flora such as dogwoods, azaleas, camellias, and wisteria. The gardens are open all year round, but the best time to visit is in late March or early April when the flowers are in full bloom.

Museum of York County

Located in enchanting Rock Hill, The Museum of York County is a fascinating attraction that offers plenty to enjoy for people of all ages. Young children will love the Tot Town section, which offers plenty of playtime and hands-on activities. The museum’s Naturalist Center is an essential destination for nature lovers, with an educational center housing more than 2,000 different plant, animal, and mineral exhibits.

Fort Mill History Museum

Over at Fort Hill, art, culture, and history buffs will find plenty more to enjoy at the Fort Hill History Museum. Here you will find an eclectic collection of art pieces at the Samuel E. White Gallery, created mainly by local artists. Equally fascinating from artistic and historical standpoints, the artwork in the gallery provides a rewarding opportunity to get a glimpse of life in the area from the 17th century to the present.

Bee City

Are you fascinated by bees and other creatures? Bee City is definitely a must-visit! As the name implies, bees are the main attraction in this Cottageville farm and interactive zoo, although there is a lot more for the family to enjoy. The interactive displays help educate young visitors on the importance of bees to the environment, and you even get to watch them build their honeycombs from scratch.

Don’t worry if bees aren’t exactly your thing. Bee City also has a charming petting zoo with everything from domestic animals such as goats, turkeys, and mini horses to exotic creatures such as lemurs, wallabies, llamas, and alpacas.

Fountain Park

Finally, check out Fountain Park in Rock Hill, which boasts a massive water fountain centerpiece set amidst a lush grassy area. One of the most beloved landmarks in South Carolina, the fountain entertains park visitors and passers-by with stunning water displays and even a stream that shoots a jet of water a hundred feet up.

Make sure to visit on the third Friday of every month from May to October, when Food Truck Friday lets you enjoy everything from craft beer to savory fare to the sound of exciting live music from the nearby amphitheater.
