Charleston Moves Shares Mobility Month Update

Published

Press Release

You are invited to join Charleston Moves for their Mobility Month program, an annual celebration of complete streets, providing safe street and bridge access for all. The series of events is aimed at bringing the community together to elevate multi-modal accomplishments, provide updates on the organization’s priority projects, and offer calls to action, as well as volunteer opportunities, to advance the local people-powered movement.

As we roll into the latter half of May, there are still a handful of ways to learn, engage and speak up for safe streets. Of particular note is their Smart Street Design event on Thursday, May 27 at 6 pm. This is a virtual discussion with national expert Angie Schmitt, author of Right of Way: Race, Class and the Silent Crisis of Pedestrian Deaths in America, on how street design impacts public safety, as well as local challenges and opportunities for positive change. A long-time writer and national editor for Streetsblog, Angie became one of the country’s best known writers on the topic of sustainable transportation. She has appeared in a number of publications and holds a master’s degree in urban planning for the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. She was a founding board member at Bike Cleveland and a co-founder of Clevelanders for Public Transit. Please RSVP HERE to attend.

Charleston Moves is also hosting Fresh Paint Rides on-your-own-time through May 31, where you are encouraged to explore Brigade Street downtown and the Isle of Palms Connector to experience multi-modal designs that are cutting-edge for our region. You are asked to email photos and a testimonial to Info@CharlestonMoves.org, and in return, will redeem a special gift. The photos and testimonial will bolster the agencies who helped make these projects happen, and will assist Charleston Moves in advocating for high-quality infrastructure in other parts of the county.

To support Charleston Moves’ on-going multi-modal advocacy, all donations this month will be matched, up to $10K, thanks to the Bike Law Foundation. Gifts of $75 or more will get entered into a raffle by Blue Sky Endurance for a bicycle tune-up and gift card.

Charleston Moves is a mobility advocacy nonprofit that works to transform our roadways and bridges into safe, connected and equitable spaces for all.
