Mitchell Hill today announced the artist reception and show opening on June 10th for Brooklyn-based artist, Jeannie Weissglass. The Tulip’s Fuse will feature 12 new abstract works supported by existing pieces in her collection. Please join us on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00pm to view the work, enjoy light refreshments, and mingle with the artist.

Jeannie Weissglass was born in Morristown, NJ; she has studied at the New York Studio School, The Fashion Institute of Technology (New York), and L’Ecole des Arts Decoratifs (Nice, FR). She has displayed work at Artist’s Space, Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, Gasser Grunert, and Farrell Pollack Fine Arts. Her work has been featured in several recent group shows, including Cliffhanger at The Royal Society of American Art in 2014, Paper Reveries at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center and 647912 at Galerie L’inlassable, both in 2015.

“My desire to pull out older works and reinvigorate them with new energy was the starting point for the paintings in The Tulip’s Fuse,” said Weissglass. “I wanted to dig in and rediscover traces of color and layers of texture that were lying below the surface. Altering the image, and often pushing the painting to its breaking point, allows me to continue painting without preconceived ideas and leads to new surprises. There are signs of the cycles of my personal history in these works, and hopefully the viewer will bring their own interpretation to enjoy them.”

Ancient graffiti carved into the walls of Roman buildings display love declarations, political rhetoric, and simple images of daily life; Jeannie Weissglass, a New York based painter, plays with the modern equivalent. Her highly worked panels and canvases are compositions layered over frayed, stained wallpapers, recalling advertising billboards in city subway stations that have met with the hands of rebels. The effect she achieves is a weathered, urban patina.
