Press Release

In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and Westrock Foundation, the city of Charleston has been awarded funding that will facilitate the planting of 30 trees in Martin Park, located at 155 Jackson Street in the city’s Eastside neighborhood. These 30 trees will add to the roughly 100 trees the city has planted in the neighborhood since 2019.

The funding is awarded to the city as part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Charleston, SC Community Tree Recovery program, in partnership with WestRock Foundation. The program aims to replace trees in communities affected by natural disasters throughout the United States by supporting more than 1,050 events, distributing more than 5.3 million trees since its inception.

“The people of South Carolina have suffered great personal and physical loss,” said Dan Lambe, Arbor Day Foundation president. “By replanting, we strive to bring healing and hope to the people and the communities in which they live, as well as help return the beauty and the value trees bring back to their properties.”

“The WestRock Foundation is excited to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation and city of Charleston to restore the tree canopy in the Eastside,” said Donna Cox, vice chair of the WestRock Foundation and chief communications officer for WestRock. “We believe healthy tree canopies and public greenspaces are vital to the wellbeing of our communities – the places where our teammates, their families and friends, live, work and play.”

City of Charleston Parks Director Jason Kronsberg said, “The city is honored to accept this generous grant, which will further our ongoing planting efforts throughout the Eastside community. On behalf of our citizens, I’d like to thank both the Arbor Day Foundation and WestRock for helping us replenish our vital urban forest.”
