Brookgreen Gardens Announces New Evening Event Series with Lighted Exhibits and Live Music
Brookgreen Gardens announced that tickets are now on sale for a new after-hours event series, Summer Light: Art by Night. Offering special access to the botanical gardens at night, back dropped by newly-created light installations and live music, the event begins June 9th and continues Wednesdays through Saturdays until August 21st.
“We are thrilled to offer visitors the opportunity to explore and experience Brookgreen’s stunning landscapes, sculpture, and galleries amid captivating lighted displays,” said Page Kiniry, President and CEO of Brookgreen Gardens. “Guests can stroll along paths to enjoy a beautiful summer evening while enjoying live music, refreshing drinks, and a variety of illuminated exhibits.”
Conceived by Jon McGann, Brookgreen’s manager of public exhibition production and logistics, and executed by the team that designs Nights of a Thousand Candles, the following nine illuminated installations will be exhibited throughout the sculpture gardens and arboretum:
- Cascades – 800 upcycled “chandeliers” of cascading light in the Welcome Plaza portico.
- Sunrise, Sunset – over 200 lanterns lighting the horizons to the east and west.
- When the Stars Align – over 800 star-like lights illuminating the oak canopy at Oak Allée
- The Nocturnal Garden – a display of colorful globes, reeds, and blooms created by Conway Glass in the Hancock Oval at the end of Oak Allée.
- Arboreal Borealis – a display of changing color projections on the live oak canopy reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis, located at the Carolina Terrace.
- Uncorked – over the Garden Wall, 800 wine bottles will be illuminated in a variety of colors.
- A Wander of Whimsy – 200 colorful lanterns illuminating The Peace Children’s Garden.
- Beacon of Light – located at the Dogwood Pond, this exhibition utilizes a variety of LED bulbs to mimic the glow of 13 cressets.
- Lightscapes – throughout the four acres of the arboretum, the canopies of the trees will be illuminated in a softly changing spectrum of colors.
In addition to the lighted displays throughout the grounds, Brookgreen’s indoor gallery spaces will be open with docent-led tours available at 7:30 pm, 8:30 pm, and 9:30 pm. In the Rosen Galleries, a pianist will play nightly on Anna Hyatt Huntington’s baby grand piano. On the lawn near the sculpture Pegasus, live music will be performed each night by various bands throughout the summer with sets beginning at 7:15 pm, 8:20 pm, and 9:25 pm.
A variety of food and beverage options will be available throughout the gardens. Guests can enjoy a sweet treat from the Kona Ice Truck, a picnic box from Harvest Restaurant, or an assortment of beverages from the Brookgreen beverage cart. A special “Wine Walker” ticket add-on will be available and includes an insulated Brookgreen wine tumbler and a glass of wine.
