Press Release

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded 91 grants totaling $1.5 million to South Carolina nonprofits working to make life better for people experiencing poverty. This latest round of awards pushes the total amount of grant funding that the Foundation has awarded nonprofits in the Palmetto State over its 25-year history to $80 million.

“To achieve this milestone during our 25th anniversary is special,” said Foundation President and CEO Tom Keith. “These dollars have helped over 3,000 organizations across all 46 counties in South Carolina.”

The latest round of grants was awarded to nonprofits that are working to reduce poverty in South Carolina in one of three ways:

  • Meeting the immediate needs of people experiencing poverty
  • Breaking the cycle of poverty
  • Working to change the systems that are considered to be drivers of poverty

While the money is substantial, the Foundation’s body of work goes far beyond the number of grants awarded. Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC established the SC Center for Fathers and Families to provide the means for fathers to be great dads and co-founded the South Carolina Grantmakers Network alongside the Self Family Foundation and the Springs Close Foundation to connect, learn and act for the good of South Carolina.

Over its history Sisters of Charity also has taken important stands on issues such as kinship care, DACA, alternatives to incarceration, and diversity-equity and inclusion. In addition, the Foundation has funded multiple research studies including a recent look at poverty statistics in South Carolina. The research enhances the organization’s efficiency and ability to provide grants that can effectively lead to systemic change.
