Happening this August at Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens shared their upcoming happenings for the month of August! See below for events and exhibitions rolling out next month.

Programming:

Summer Light: Art by Night, every Wednesday – Saturday until Aug. 21

The new event, Summer Light: Art by Night offers special access to the gardens at night, backdropped by newly created light installations and live music. In addition to the lighted displays throughout the grounds, Brookgreen’s indoor gallery spaces will be open with docent-led tours available at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. In the Rosen Galleries, a pianist will play nightly on Anna Hyatt Huntington’s baby grand piano. On the lawn near the sculpture Pegasus, live music will be performed each night by various bands throughout the summer with sets beginning at 7:15 p.m., 8:20 p.m., and 9:25 p.m. A variety of food and beverage options will be available throughout the gardens. Guests can enjoy a sweet treat from the Kona Ice Truck, a picnic box from Harvest Restaurant, or an assortment of beverages from the Brookgreen beverage cart.

The Gullah Geechee Program Series – The Musicology of the Gullah Geechee Culture, August 11 & 25

The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture will run through September with in-person and virtual options available. It will feature the themes of tempo and texture while teaching how music is intertwined in the culture and language during interactive presentations on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Auditorium. Reservations can be made by calling 843.235.6049.

Blumera Trunk Show, August 4

This August, visitors to Brookgreen can shop The Blumera Trunk Show and Meet & Greet held in the Jennewein Gallery in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion. Blumera’s collections are made-to-order and comprised of hand-carved wood and brass, hand-embroidered threads and other unusual, extraordinary fusions of sustainable materials and designs.

Grainger McKoy Trunk Show at Keepsakes, August 4

Grainger McKoy presents jewelry for women and men, fine sterling pieces for the home, table and bay gifts, plus limited edition, life-sized sculptures available for purchase online. Visitors are invited to shop this trunk show at the Keepsakes gift shop to discover the work of a great American artist and sculptor. Grainger McKoy Jr., son of the artist will be in attendance to answer any questions.

Children’s Activity Days, August 6 – 8

Brookgreen invites families to the Wall Lowcountry Education Center for Children’s Activity Days. Guests can drop in for make-and-take crafts to create a backyard habitat. No reservations are needed.

Sculpting the Figure in Motion with Brittany Ryan, August 9 – 13

Artist Brittany Ryan will lead this five-day journey in sculpting the human form in motion. Participants will focus on how to best create a sense of believable movement and weight in sculpture. There will be lectures on anatomy, gesture and composition throughout the week as well as discussions based on contemporary figurative sculptors who make great use of motion in their work.

“Gullah Spirituals” – Book Signing with Dr. Eric Crawford, August 11

Coastal Carolina University’s Dr. Eric S. Crawford authored, “Gullah Spirituals, The Sound of Freedom and Protest in the South Carolina Sea Island,” which recently has been released by USC Press. On August 11, he will be at Brookgreen for a book signing following the 1:00 p.m. presentation of The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture by Ron Daise in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium.

Getting Your Green Thumb Wet: Floating Wetlands and Shoreline Buffers for Your Pond, August 19

Guinn Wallover will lead this presentation on how native plants can be used in floating wetlands and shoreline buffers to enhance pond systems. Wallover serves as a water resources extension agent for the coastal district and serves as a coordinator of the Master Pond Manager program.

Water Gardens: A Walking Tour of Brookgreen’s Pools, August 20

Visitors can join Brookgreen’s talented aquaculture volunteers as they lead a tour through the gardens to view select garden pools. Participants will view beautiful water lilies in bloom as the volunteers provide insight and information on water gardening.

Workshops for Children and Families, August 21

This session with Bryan Rapp will teach adults and their children how to create human and animal three-dimensional forms using provided materials such as aluminum foil and wire. To register, call (843) 235-6034.

Flowers of Enlightenment and the Enlightenment of Flowers, August 21

Dr. Ronald Green is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Coastal Carolina University and a specialist in Asian religions with a focus on the history and philosophy of Japanese Buddhism. He will lead this presentation at Brookgreen to highlight the symbolism of plants, including the lotus in Buddhism.

Open Studio, August 25

Open Studio sessions are a live monthly event open to the public in the Campbell Sculpture Center Studio. Participants will join Bryan Rapp, Brookgreen’s Director of the Master Sculptor Program, and observe sculpture-making processes, demonstrations. There will be time for a Q&A at the end.

Brookgreen 101 – American Sculpture and the Huntington Legacy, August 26,

Brookgreen 101 is a public information program offered usually on the fourth Thursday of the month at 1:00pm in the Lowcountry Auditorium.  The topics may cover various aspects of Brookgreen Gardens including the collections, property history, people, poetry, art history, corporate history, the founders, and Brookgreen purposes.  Each program lasts approximately one hour.  The appearance of special guests and the program topics are subject to change. Navigating a Portrait Commission without a Model, with Wesley Wofford, FNSS, August 30 – September 3

This five-day intensive workshop will focus on the business and art of a portrait commission.  It will simulate portrait sculpture commissions where the subject is unavailable, be it a historical or posthumous work, or a specific situation where the model is inaccessible.  It will include client interactions, contracts, budgeting, and historical and reference collections. The course is appropriate for beginners and advanced sculpture students as each participant will receive instruction based on skill level.

Ongoing Special Exhibitions:

SANKOFA: The 14th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition, July 3 – Nov. 25, 2021

Curated by Cookie Washington, this annual juried exhibit showcases works in fiber created by African American artists from across the country. The 14th installment of this traveling exhibition features fiber art pieces from 23 artists who were challenged to create a pictorial fiber artwork interpreting the Adinkra symbol of Sankofa, and its associated proverb to “reach back and get it.” The Sankofa images are a reminder to use the wisdom of the past to aid one in the present moment. The artists were asked to include one Sankofa in each artwork. The exhibit will feature 27 pieces of art, including three dolls and 24 quilts/wall hangings. Exhibiting artists include Aisha Lumumba, Carolyn Brackat, Torreah “Cookie” Washington, Janette Holland, Edith Gross, Joyce Daniels, and Renee Fleuranges-Valdes. The exhibit will be on display in the Lowcountry Center Auditorium daily from noon – 4:30 p.m.

Wild Bees, June 5 – Sept. 30, 2021

Wild Bees, an exhibition showcasing the works of Paula Sharp and Ross Eatman, is a collection of stunning macro photographs depicting the world of America’s native bees. The exhibition is on a national tour of prominent museums, botanical gardens and will be featured in Brookgreen’s Noble Gallery at the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion from June 5 – Sept. 30.

National Sculpture Society 88^th Annual Awards Exhibition, June 12 – Aug. 22, 2021

The premier annual exhibition of American figurative sculpture returns to Brookgreen! Featuring the work of American masters alongside rising artists, the National Sculpture Society’s annual awards exhibition presents the finest in contemporary figurative sculpture. Visitors to Brookgreen can vote for their favorite to win the People’s Choice Award which is announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
