Gibbes Museum of Art 2022 Visiting Artist Application Opens this Weekend

The application for 2022 Visiting Artists at the Gibbes Museum of Art opens this weekend on Aug. 1, 2021. The program features eight artists annually whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South. Applicants can submit Aug. 1, 2021, through Sept. 15, 2021.

“The Gibbes strives to provide access to contemporary art through our vibrant Visiting Artist series and we are so excited to see what South Carolina artists bring to the table in the upcoming year,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “The program promotes creativity, introduces new art forms, provides perspective on community issues, encourages freedom of thought and connects us with larger audiences. We are looking for artists that spark a conversation and advance understanding of the larger context that fostered their work.”

There are four six-week Visiting Artist sessions scheduled for 2022. The Gibbes extends invitations to both emerging and nationally recognized artists of all backgrounds and is committed to cultivating an experience that is diverse and affirming. Applicants are encouraged to consider the following themes: environmental conservation, social justice, health and wellness and innovation and incorporate one or more in their proposal, introducing their current studio practice, artwork content and type of project they would pursue in-residency.

Visiting Artists receive a weekly honorarium and one-time materials stipend. Following the residency, artists will have the opportunity to exhibit works in the Ruth and Bill Baker Art Sales Gallery and collaborate on exclusive products to be sold in the Museum Store. There are also opportunities to lead adult workshops and participate in virtual programs.

Applications for all sessions will be accepted Aug. 1, 2021, through Sept. 15, 2021, by 11:59 p.m. All submissions will be reviewed by a committee of Gibbes staff members and diverse arts professionals. To review the eligibility requirements, rules and FAQs, click here.

The 2022 Visiting Artist studio sessions are tentatively scheduled for:

• Feb. 21 – April 3, 2022 (Session I)
• May 2 – June 12, 2022 (Session II)
• Aug. 29 – Oct. 9, 2022 (Session III)
• Oct. 24 – Dec. 4, 2022 (Session IV)

Marina Savashynskaya Dunbar, Session III: Aug. 30 – Oct. 10, 2021

Dunbar was born in Belarus and moved to the U.S. when she was nine years old. She studied business and art at Columbia State University and now resides in Charleston. Her paintings are nature-based abstractions, composed through harmonious movement, material improvisation and layers of translucent color. While in residence at the Gibbes, she plans to create a body of work influenced by Betwixt and Between, an installation by Patrick Dougherty displayed in the museum’s glass atrium on the second floor.

Alexandria Dickerson, Session III: Aug. 30 – Oct. 10, 2021

Dickerson is a self-taught artist from Charleston. They explore the ramifications of black subjugation and the utopian potential of Afrofuturism through the mediums of oil painting, wood carving and cyanotype. While in residence at the Gibbes, the artist’s goal is to render at least three pieces of artwork consisting of 24×30 wood panels. After the initial carving state, paper prints of each piece will be pulled, and the wooden blocks will be stained with a light-sensitive iron salt and left to develop under the sun which creates a ghostly holographic effect. The pieces will continue the artist’s investigation into selfhood, identity and the dualism of antiquation and technology.

Daisy McClellan, Session IV: Oct. 25 – Dec. 5, 2021

McClellan, who moved to Charleston in 2020, launched a full-fledged jewelry-making business that took her on tour around the country selling her designs at various boutiques and maker markets. In 2014, she and her husband opened a brick-and-mortar retail shop in San Francisco where they featured over 200 artists and hosted creative workshops. In addition, she designed a clothing collection for women and young children, founded a bi-annual shopping market for local boutiques and worked with several artists on collaborations. The artists utilized century-old traditional techniques like punch needle rug making and sewing in new and creative ways to create functional objects. Striving to spark joy with every creation, she hopes her work can encourage appreciation for lasting handmade craftsmanship.

Susan Klein, Session IV: Oct. 25 – Dec. 5, 2021

Klein is an associate professor of art at the College of Charleston. She has shown her work nationally and internationally and is a 2020-2021 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. While in residence at the Gibbes, she plans to work on mixed media paintings and drawings inspired by her sculptural work. Ideas that influence her work include the way individuals imbue objects with the power to hold memory, how the living is tied to the dead and connections to past and present. Museum visitors will experience the artist working from fired sculptures to paintings in the studio so they can see the connections between two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.
