The Charleston Rugby Football Club is launching two events to recruit new members to the team for the Fall Season, which kicks off at the end of September.

On Sunday, August 15th, they will hold the Blockade Beer Bust at The Mill in Park Circle from 3 pm to 6 pm. Join the team for on the back patio for $1 PBRs plus music from DJ Lunchboxx. The team, along with alumni, will be there to mix and mingle with potential recruits and fans alike. The event will also be promoting the Blockade’s “Rugby 101” event that is happening on the following Saturday.

On Saturday, August 21st, the “Rugby 101” event will be held at the Danny Jones Recreational Center Exchange Field in North Charleston. Potential new players can come out to see what rugby is all about. No experience is needed and gives potential recruits the opportunity to see the team in action. After the event, there will be an event party.

Formed in 2012, the Charleston Blockade Rugby Football Club says they are South Carolina’s first gay sports team. They are a social sports team in association with USA Rugby and the International Gay Rugby Association. The Charleston Blockade, in conjunction with the IGR (International Gay Rugby), actively works to end the stigma of homosexuality in sports.

The purpose of the Blockade is to create a space in the Charleston area for individuals of all walks of life to play rugby and find a welcoming community. Everyone is welcome to join their all-inclusive team regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, body type, or skill level.

They support local organizations like We Are Family and Palmetto Community Care through volunteer work and fundraisers. Members of the Charleston Blockade also serve in the community by helping local homeless shelters, animal shelters, and children’s sports organizations.

The team also travels for games all over the map including overseas. It is $100 per season per player to be a part of the Charleston Blockade. They are looking for ages 21 to mid-40’s.
