The Gibbes Museum of Art Welcomes a New Exhibit to the Art Sales Gallery

The Gibbes Museum of Art will feature local Charleston artist Camela Guevara and her new exhibit, Art Coveralls: Merging Mark-making and the Sewn Form in Workwear, in the Ruth and Bill Baker Art Sales Gallery from August 20th through October 17th, 2021.

Guevara created Art Coveralls during her residency as a Visiting Artist at the Gibbes Museum from May 3rd to 30th, 2021. The artist created digital paintings and then made them into repeating patterns to be printed onto fabric. She then cut and sewed these into workwear coveralls to demonstrate all the skilled labor involved in clothing production while in the studio at the Gibbes Museum. The artist shows the joyful creation of another world where fashion is not destructive and harmful, instead full of delight and possibility.

The Gibbes’ Visiting Artist Series features the work of local and regional artists; the series promotes creativity, encourages freedom of thought and connects artists with a broader audience. The museum is accepting submissions for the Visiting Artist Series. Artists who live in South Carolina can apply for a four to six-week session. The program features 6 – 8 contemporary artists annually, whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South.
