Brookgreen Gardens to Host Annual Gullah Geechee Junkanoo
Brookgreen Gardens will host the fourth annual Gullah Geechee Junkanoo on September 18th from 9:30 am to 4 pm. A masquerade and cultural celebration, this event will feature informational sessions on Gullah Geechee harvest, habitat, and heritage as well as cultural demonstrations of African drumming, cooking, and art.
“We are so thankful to be able to host the fourth annual Gullah Geechee Junkanoo at Brookgreen Gardens,” said Page Kiniry, president and CEO of Brookgreen Gardens. “This celebration is a fun way for visitors to gain insight into the Gullah Geechee culture so it can continue to be preserved for future generations.”
A Junkanoo is a street festival of mixed African origin with costumes, music, and dance that began as a celebration of emancipation. Brookgreen’s Gullah Geechee Junkanoo raises awareness, preserves, and celebrates the local Gullah Geechee culture.
Ron Daise, vice president for creative education at Brookgreen Gardens and Gullah descendant, is dedicated to creating entertaining and informative programs about the culture, food, language, and history of the Gullah Geechee people.
“At Brookgreen, we celebrate Gullah Geechee culture year-round through programming and special exhibitions,” says Ron. “However, the Gullah Geechee Junkanoo is a special celebration that offers visitors an exceptional experience to take part in something that is educational and fun.”
The event will be held at the Wall Lowcountry Center Complex and Leonard Pavilion at Brookgreen Gardens (1931 Brookgreen Drive, Murrells Inlet)
