Junk Drawer, an Art Show About Things, Opens Oct. 1 at Meyer Vogl Gallery
Press ReleaseMeyer Vogl Gallery’s upcoming group exhibition Junk Drawer is a show about things. When we think of still lifes as a form of artistic expression, our minds often go to traditional flowers in a vase; fruits and vegetables arranged in such a way.
Junk Drawer is a still life show for the rest of us. For the group exhibition, artists Nancy Hoerter, Glory Day Loflin, Lori Putnam, Dylan Martinez, Shelby Monteverde, and Marissa Vogl are finding inspiration in the random items and objects that catch their attention around the house or along the path of their day – the little nothings that, at just the right moment, are everythings.
The show will include Dylan Martinez’s iconic water bags made of glass. There will be paintings of laundry baskets basking in light from Meyer Vogl newcomer Shelby Monteverde, and odes to birthday cake from Lori Putnam.
In addition, Marissa Vog’s abstract paintings are inspired by actual junk drawers. “The kitchen junk drawer is a sentimental ode to both my and my husband’s grandparents and parents who all had great junk drawers,” Vogl says. “Ours is full of junk that we just have to keep. Stashes of Skittles, Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids. We of course have the traditional batteries, rubber bands, and markers that are probably dried out. My favorite sentimental treasure is leftover bags of wildflower seeds we handed out at our wedding 10 years ago.”
Junk Drawer opens October 1st (with an opening celebration being held that night, from 5 pm to 8 pm; all are welcome).
The Meyer Vogl Gallery is located at 122 Meeting Street.
