Press Release

On October 14th, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC (ABVI) will celebrate 85 years of service to individuals in our community who are blind or visually impaired. During the month of October, ABVI will honor the clients we serve as well as the donors, grantors and community partners who have made our 85 years of service possible through our ABVI Awareness Month initiative.

ABVI Awareness Month raises awareness for the need for vision rehabilitation services in our community as there are more than 15,000 adults who are blind or visually impaired living in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester Counties, and spotlights clients’ journeys towards independence through skills training and support services. ABVI Awareness Month is celebrated in conjunction with World Sight Day (October 14th), White Cane Day (October 15th) and ABVI’s 85th Birthday (October 14th). Tri-County residents can participate in ABVI Awareness Month by following ABVI’s social media accounts, taking this opportunity to learn about ABVI clients and services and by donating to the ABVI Awareness Month Campaign.

“Once led by community volunteers, ABVI’s team is over 10 people strong, and includes licensed instructors and highly trained low vision therapists. What once operated as a community center for community members who are blind and visually impaired, now serves as a full-service vision rehabilitation program, where clients learn the skills they need to live safely and independently despite their visual impairment.”- Courtney Plotner, President and CEO.
