Charleston Author Releases Second Book in “Heyward the Horse” Series
Local author and illustrator Andrew Barton has published the second book in his “Heyward the Horse” children’s book series. Heyward the Horse and The Founding of Charleston will be released on Tuesday, October 5th.
The hardback book is now available for pre-orders online. It will also be available for purchase at several local retailers and online at www.heywardthehorse.com.
In this latest book, carriage horse Heyward M. Pinckney IV takes young readers back in time to the very beginning of Charleston. With the help of his magic bow tie, Heyward embarks on a journey with his renowned ancestor, Heyward the First. Follow along as they travel across the ocean to the New World. Discover mighty ships, dangerous jungles, pirate battles, native peoples, cool maps, walled cities, and more.
Barton is an accomplished graphic designer and illustrator. He was inspired to write his own books focused on the city he’s called home for more than a decade. Combining his love of history and drawing, Barton published his first “Heyward” book in 2019.
In Heyward the Horse Loves Charleston, Of Course!, the first book in the series, Heyward takes readers on a carriage ride past a variety of Charleston area landmarks and attractions, including Riley Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row, historic churches and the Charleston City Market. With his magical bow tie, Heyward is able to fly his carriage over the Holy City, pointing out the marshes, plantations, and the beaches.
“My first Heyward the Horse book highlighted some of the most recognizable and historic spots around Charleston, so for this second book, it made sense to dig a little deeper into Charleston’s founding,” Barton said. “Of course, our story starts at Charles Towne Landing, which is the area’s best kept secret. It also incorporates elements that kids love: maps, sailing and pirates. In this book, kids can use their imaginations while getting a history lesson.”
