Lowcountry Food Bank Raises $60,001 to Fight Hunger
The Lowcountry Food Bank held a “hybrid” walk event to bring greater awareness to hunger issues in coastal South Carolina during Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month and raise funds for Lowcountry Food Bank programs, including Senior Meals, Childhood Hunger programs, and fresh produce options for the community.
The Lowcountry Food Bank Walk to Fight Hunger took place on Sunday at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Donors and friends were encouraged to drop in to the park and participate in a self-guided walking tour at their own pace and comfort level.
Lowcountry Food Bank also hosted a “drive-thru” food drive at the event. Participants graciously donated more than 850 pounds of non-perishable, canned proteins, canned fruits and canned vegetables, and 75 pounds of diapers.
“We want to thank our gracious partners and our community at-large for joining us on Sunday to learn more about the hunger issues our Lowcountry neighbors face every day, right here in our own community,” said Nick Osborne, Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO. “The continued support from community enables us to help provide nutritious food for our neighbors in need.”
Food insecurity among children in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina rose 38% between 2019 and 2020 with more than 55,000 children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The rise in food insecurity among adults in the 10 coastal counties rose 29% between 2019 and 2020, representing more than 185,000 people who struggle with hunger.
