SeamonWhiteside’s Ashley River Park Project Sets Precedent for Dorchester County with New Recreation Space

SeamonWhiteside (SW+), a full-service land design firm with offices throughout the Carolinas, is proud to announce its partnership in developing the Ashley River Park, an 87-acre public park in Dorchester County. The park sits on the banks of the scenic Ashley River adjacent to the historic Bacons Bridge on Bacons Bridge Road. Dorchester County began its design in 2015 and is set to be completed by the end of this year. 

The Ashley River Park will add tremendous value to Dorchester County and the Summerville area, offering various activities and outdoor recreation, including an interactive play fountain designed to look like a map of Ashley River, two dog parks, open lawn areas, playground and picnic areas, an event space consisting of a Pavilion and tiered lawn by a large pond with fishing piers and boardwalks. Along the banks of the Ashley River is an upgraded kayak launch and picnic area. SeamonWhiteside worked cautiously to preserve the current land features, including the many wetlands within the park, while adding these new elements.

“Our biggest goal in the execution of this project was to make a park that was everything that Dorchester County and the community wanted it to be. It was important to us that Ashley River Park be a special part of Dorchester County,” says Jennifer Palmer, Director of the Summerville Office. “This park is in close proximity to the Summerville town limits, so we all knew that it needed to be something spectacular to set a precedent for Dorchester County and the whole town. We have been working on this project with Dorchester County staff and Council  when it was just a vision, and we are all very proud of what it has become.”

SeamonWhiteside worked closely with Liollio Architecture, Edcon Construction and McSweeney Engineers on the Ashley River Park to bring the master plan to a reality. “The strong relationship that Edcon has forged with Seamon Whiteside [allowed] us to bounce ideas off one another to ensure the final product [exceeded] the client’s expectations,” says Josh Edwards, Project Manager at Edcon Construction. “We can’t wait to pull back the curtain on all of the hard work that our team has put into this project and officially open the park for Dorchester County residents to enjoy for many years to come!”
