Spirituality & Sexuality: What’s The Connection?

Published

on

Sex is often seen as a form of short-term pleasure and release – a means to an end. Many religious groups frown upon sex and see many aspects of it as sinful or forbidden. However, sex is one of the most natural ways to build intimacy, trust, and emotional connection with our partners. Many individuals go as far as to view sex as a spiritual experience – one that leads to a spiritually fulfilling relationship with our partners.

What is spirituality?

Spirituality is a broad term that’s open to many different interpretations and associated with some religions. Primarily, it’s the belief that we are part of something larger and the recognition that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. It’s important to note that you don’t have to be religious to be spiritual.

There are many ways people explore their spirituality. Meditation would be one of the most well-known spiritual practices. However, many believe sex to be a spiritual act that can provide you with a direct connection to your higher self.

What’s the link between spirituality and sex?

The link between sex and spirituality is powerful, with some promoting sacred sex as a spiritual experience with yourself or your partner. If we consider the role of sex in nature, we know that it’s about procreation and fertility among all living things on earth. In all its forms, sex is responsible for the diversity of plant and animal life (including us). It’s a great life force which is why many see it to have a universal spiritual quality. Our instinctive driving force to have sex and reproduce is called “libido”, a Latin word translated to “psychic drive or energy associated with our sexual instinct”.

Sex as a pure, cosmic form of lovemaking is thought to have a profound psychological effect on our overall wellbeing and carries over into our everyday life. It’s believed to promote a connection with your higher self, helping you become more attuned with spiritual values like compassion, humility, freedom, respect, forgiveness, wisdom, and love.

How do you have more spiritual sex?

It’s important to note that you do not need a partner to engage with a more spiritual form of sex. You may be interested in buying some props and accessories to help you explore yourself or your partner more. For example, quality men’s sex toys, women’s toys, lingerie, oils, incense etc.

  • Create an environment in which spiritual sex can blossom:

For this, it’s essential to engage the senses. Perhaps invest in essential oils and play calming meditative sounds in the background to promote spiritual healing. You can also light candles or incense to engage a calming and relaxing atmosphere.

  • Share breath:

When inviting an experience of spiritual sex, meditative breathwork can be a powerful way for you to connect with your body (solo) and become in sync with your partner. For example, inhaling and exhaling six times together will make you feel more present with one another.

  • Intuitive Flow:

Spiritual sex is about exploring sexual intimacy with yourself or your partner in whatever way you feel moved to do so. It’s essential to allow fluid movement while remaining in the present moment. One way to encourage a state of presence is with eye contact.

Spirituality is about learning who we are – our higher selves, and having safe, consensual sex with a partner can be a powerful part of your spiritual journey.
