Charleston Animal Society Plans Emergency Rescue for 35 Animals

As part of its No Kill South Carolina 2024 initiative, Charleston Animal Society is transporting 35 animals from the Berkeley County Animal Center to the Massachusetts SPCA in Salem. Crews Subaru of Charleston is sponsoring this deployment of Charleston Animal Society’s Disaster Response Team.

“This strategy saves lives by going to shelters who are overwhelmed with animals and moving them to other shelters who need animals to adopt,” said No Kill South Carolina 2024 Chief Project Officer Abigail Appleton, CAWA, PMP. “While we are nearing the end of this year’s ‘kitten season,’ Berkeley County and other shelters are overcapacity in the number of cats they have.”

This is the 14th deployment in 2021 for Charleston Animal Society’s Disaster Response Team, which oversees these rescue operations. Included in this year’s deployments, the team responded to Mississippi ahead of Hurricane Ida to rescue animals in harm’s way and also assisted in the largest cruelty bust in South Carolina state history this past summer. Volunteers help staff the deployments.

“As one of only a few organizations that responds across our region to save animals from disaster, we have to be prepared for anything,” said Charleston Animal Society President and CEO Joe Elmore, CAWA, CFRE. “From hurricanes to cruelty cases and shelters in crisis, we answer the call.”
