BCLS Early Literacy Program with Tri-County Partners Continues to Flourish
Berkeley County Library System, Trident United Way, Charleston County Public Library, and Dorchester County Library are continuing to partner since their kick-off event on October 2nd by promoting reading to children from birth to age five and improve regional literacy gaps with 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
Kick-off celebrations stirred all parts of the Tri-County, with events at libraries in Moncks Corner, North Charleston, St. George and Summerville. Berkeley County Library System has registered 48 children since October 2nd.
This partnership is crucial to boost reading development, which is critically needed in our region, as the statistics show.
- During birth to age 5, 90% of a child’s brain development occurs. (Center for the Developing Child, Harvard University, 2021).
- According to a 2020 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment in South Carolina, 74% of Berkeley County children are considered “not ready” when starting kindergarten.
- More than one million new neural connections are formed every second during the first few years of life. (Center for the Developing Child, Harvard University, 2021).
