Press Release

Dorchester County Council is completing the process of redrawing County Council districts from which members of council are elected to accommodate the population changes of the previous decade. This process is required by the Home Rule Act of 1975 and the Code of Laws of South Carolina Section 4-9-90, and is completed following the census every ten years and before the next general election (November 8, 2022). Dorchester County Council districts are redrawn by County Council, and the redistricting plan is adopted by ordinance and requires three readings and a public hearing with maps and/or descriptions.

First reading of an ordinance to adopt the redistricting plan was approved by County Council on November 15, 2021.

County Council held a public hearing on December 6, 2021 and approved second reading of the ordinance to approve the redistricting plan. Adjustments can be made to the plan by amendment by Council prior to third reading on December 16, 2021.  Citizens may address County Council to provide feedback prior to third reading. The proposed amendments to the redistricting plan and maps can be accessed by visiting www.dorchestercountysc.gov/redistricting.

Dorchester County Council will consider third and final reading on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the County Council Meeting at 6:00 PM in the Summerville County Council Chambers located at 500 N. Main Street in the Human Services Building.
