Lowcountry Running Book Written By Local Mom and Daughter Benefits Female Athletes

Starting with just a title, a local woman and her 12-year-old child decided to write a book during the pandemic. After 18 months, Pamela Jouan-Goldman and her daughter Julia self-published TURTLE, a middle grade sport fiction book.

The book is the first in the “Run Like A Girl” series, which is about a 5th grader who moves to the Lowcountry and joins a track club. In addition to releasing an entertaining book for children, the duo’s mission includes donating book sale profits to organizations that benefit female athletes.

They raised $1,000 for the Mount Pleasant Track Club from November and December sales. The donation will directly help a female athlete travel to high profile meets. Pamela and Julia are now working with Girls on the Run and have designs to reach out to track clubs with similar initiatives.

Pamela says she and Julia have been running competitively since the latter was 5-years-old, so they pulled stories from their real life experiences. She said the goal of the book series is to encourage female athletes to stay in sports by tackling the unique issues they deal with head on.
