BCLS Offers Technology and Tranquility with New Devices and Passes

Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) has received additional SmartSpot (WiFi) devices through a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The devices are available for a two-week loan period for ages 18 and older. BCLS SmartSpot devices provide WiFi access with 4G LTE enabled high-speed internet connectivity and are Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliant.

BCLS SmartSpot devices can be used for eLearning, stream education courses, webinars, virtual meetings, school portals, and other internet uses.  Also, these devices block sites like Netflix and Spotify to keep students safe and on-task.

“The Berkeley County Library System acquired additional SmartSpots provided by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the South Carolina State Library,” said Gene Brunson, Library Director for Berkeley County Library System. “For those who lack internet access or need a temporary internet connection, the Library is pleased to continue providing mobile internet access to customers who need internet access for school, work, and family connections during this time.”

These devices can be easily searched in the BCLS Catalog under hotspot or smartspot and placed on hold for pick up in the libraries or curbside pick-up. Visit BCLS catalog to search.

BCLS has also renewed its Check Out SC: State Park Program through March 2023 from a partnership with South Carolina State Library and South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) with 20 additional State Park Passes.  Each pass will give customers free day-entry per vehicle to all 47 South Carolina State Parks with a two-week checkout period. Visit BCLS catalog and search for SC Pass for a complete list of all 47 Parks.  South Carolina Passes can be placed on hold and picked up in the libraries or curbside pick-up.
