Charleston County Counter Threat Project Coordinator to Participate in International Conference
Charleston County’s Counter Threat Project Coordinator Lauren Knapp will be the keynote speaker at an international conference about hate crimes. Numerous speakers from hate crime units across Canada, as well as top hate investigators from internal police agencies, will focus on several key issues involving hate crime policing. The conference will cover several topics, including the organization and recruitment tactics of hate groups, prevention of and response to hate-motivated mass casualty attacks, using the internet to spread hate propaganda, as well as legal and procedural challenges involved in hate crime investigations.
“I am honored to be a keynote speaker for this conference,” said Knapp. “My career has allowed me to work on several investigations involving hate crimes. I am happy to share my knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices so other agencies can improve their investigations when it comes to hate crimes.”
The conference will be held virtually February 8-9 and is for active Canadian Police. Attendees will include the Minister of National Canadian Public Safety, Chief of Toronto Police, and Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Knapp was hired as the Counter Threat Project Coordinator for Charleston County Department of Public Safety in June 2020. As the Counter Threat Coordinator, she helps provide support to five directors within Charleston County Government Public Safety Department, including the 911 Consolidated Dispatch Center, Emergency Management Department, Awendaw Fire Department, Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and Emergency Management Division.
