BCLS Brings History to Life with Living History Series at Goose Creek Library

Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) will host a new Living History Series in February at Goose Creek Library. 

All series will feature different speakers and topics: 

• We’re Still Here:  The History and Culture of the Wassamasaw Tribe
  • Join Lisa Collins, Tribal Administrator, Saturday, February 5 from 1 – 3 pm, to learn more about the Wassamasaw Varnertown Tribe, a local state-recognized tribe of indigenous peoples.  She will conduct an overview of the Wassamasaw Tribal History and discuss the eight Tribal Bloodlines (Broad, Clark, Varner, Dangerfield, Driggers, Burbage, Huff, and Williams) and the additional tribal bloodlines (The Etiwan, Cherokee, Catawba, Edisto) that comprise the Wassamasaw Indian Community native progenitors.  Also, the event will include a presentation by Cultural Preservationist, Tammy Leach, on cultural activities including applique beading, using the eight tribal symbols with a review of their significance and importance.
• The Grim Years
  • Presented by Michael J. Heitzler – Join Michael J. Heitzler, former Goose Creek Mayor and long-time historian, Wednesday, February 9 from 4 – 5 pm, for fascinating stories of individuals who lived in our era including Blackbeard, Wateree Jack, and others.   Registration is required due to limited seating.  Visit thegrimyearslecture.eventbrite.com and register today!

  • Join Madelyne Spann, local children’s book author, Wednesday, February 16 from 5 – 7 pm for interesting stories
