Colleton Medical Center Continues to Provide State-of-the-Art Care with Da Vinci Xi
On Monday, February 7th, Dr. Andrew Calcutt, General Surgeon, utilized Colleton Medical Center’s new Da Vinci Xi (Xi) to perform a minimally invasive hernia repair.
“The Xi provides more ergonomic support, giving the surgeon stability and dexterity,” said Dr. Calcutt. “Benefits for patients can include shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, faster recovery, smaller incisions and a reduced or no need for narcotic pain medication.”
By combining advanced robotic, computer, and optical technologies, the Xi allows surgeons to perform procedures, such as colon resection, hernia repair, and other surgeries, using techniques that are less invasive than conventional open surgery.
The Xi system mimics the movements of the human wrist which translates into more precise movements using tiny instruments inserted into the patient’s body through smaller incisions. In comparison to the older SI system, the Xi features thinner robotic arms with redesigned joints that enable a greater range of motion.
“We continue to invest in new technology as part of our ongoing commitment to offer our patients state-of-the-art healthcare,” said Jimmy Hiott, Colleton Medical Center CEO. “For many residents, traveling to nearby Charleston is not an option. We’re happy to offer the same high caliber services here in Walterboro, utilizing the newest technology to care for our community like family.”
