Magnetic South: College of Charleston & Charleston Symphony Team Up to Perform Contemporary Music Compositions
After a silent season due to Covid-19, Magnetic South, the professional new music series collaboration between the College of Charleston Department of Music and the Charleston Symphony, returns to present a concert of stylistically diverse works of the 20th and 21st centuries that represent its programming and commissioning philosophy.
Under the baton of College of Charleston Associate Professor of Music Theory/Composition, Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, the performance includes “Catch and Release” (2006) by celebrated Finnish composer and Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony, Esa-Pekka Salonen; “tiny fonts” (originally commissioned and premiered by Magnetic South in 2015) by West Coast composer and UC Davis Professor Laurie San Martin’s; and two important 20th century staples: Theodore Antoniou’s seminal “Octet” (1986) and Igor Stravinsky’s “Suite no1 for small orchestra” (1925).
The next concert, “Catch and Release,” will be held on Friday, March 11th at 7:30 pm in the Sottile Theatre (44 George Street). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online, by calling (843) 723-7528, or at the door.
