Senator Mia McLeod Thanks Labor Leaders for “I Matter” Program

Democratic candidate for Governor, Senator Mia McLeod, released the following statement thanking the South Carolina Labor movement for their COVID-19 community outreach program:

“When elected officials fail to protect SC children and teachers, the responsibility falls to the men and women of South Carolina who care enough to do what their elected officials won’t.

I want to commend Union leader Chris Hall and all of the hardworking men and women of SMART Local Union 399 for spearheading the “I Matter” program that raises funds to help purchase and provide masks, hand sanitizers, and other protective items for our students and teachers.

I’m thankful that when the Governor and House and Senate leaders shirked their responsibility and put our students and teachers in harm’s way through their budget proviso, the SC AFL-CIO and their union partners stepped up and raised thousands of dollars to help protect our children because they are indeed, the future of our state.

As a fierce advocate for the hard-working people of SC, I’ve introduced bills in the SC Senate to require mandatory safety protocols for SC businesses and schools and appreciate the SC AFL-CIO and the creative, compassionate efforts of unions to help keep our state’s most vulnerable safe. I will always support their efforts and fight for common-sense COVID safety protocols that protect our most important assets– our people, as we continue to work our way through this deadly pandemic.”
