Historic Charleston Foundation Announces 75th Anniversary Event Schedule

The Historic Charleston Foundation this week announced a calendar of events to celebrate their 75^th anniversary as an advocacy organization advancing the mission of preserving and protecting Charleston and the Lowcountry environs.

For 75 years, Historic Charleston Foundation has created a legacy of preserving historic resources and management of our region’s growth. By embracing the historic fabric of Charleston, from our easement and covenant program to our advocacy supporting African American settlement communities, the Historic Charleston Foundation has created a legacy of impact in the Charleston community and beyond. As historic preservation has evolved, the Foundation has broadened its scope into balancing the pressures of modern growth with protecting the sensitive historic fabric of the region.

In a Press Conference on February 8, 2022, Mayor John Tecklenburg said, in describing the City’s collaboration with the Foundation, “I don’t think a lot of people know about how much good work we’ve done in just in the short period of time, together.” One of the Foundation’s many impacts is the Foundation’s dedication to each mission, including affordable housing. Together with the city of Charleston, the Foundation founded the non-profit Charleston Redevelopment Corporation and, “since then, in just a few years time, this joint effort has led to the purchase and maintenance of affordability on hundreds of units and renovations of single-family homes as well…that’s what Historic Charleston Foundation’s mission is, to protect our quality of life and our sense of authentic place here in Charleston.”

In closing her remarks, Zoe Stephens, Chair of the Board of Trustees said, “With our sights on the future and to the unknowns of the next 75 years, we refocus and redouble our efforts to protect this cherished region – inspiring architectural and urban design, uncovering and teaching history, educating through community forums, upholding aesthetic and planning standards, protecting cultural values, fighting for quality, sensitivity and innovation in large-scale building developments, advocating for tourism management, flooding and resiliency efforts, and ensuring the cultural character and livability of the Charleston region. With so much work ahead, and so much worth protecting, you might even say that we’re just getting started.”
