Charleston Symphony Announces Search for Youth Orchestra Conductor

The Charleston Symphony (CSO) announced its search for a talented and dynamic individual to serve in a unique role as Conductor of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra and Operations Assistant for the CSO. As one of the CSO’s core educational programs, the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO) serves over 100 young musicians ranging in grades 4-12 from 35 schools throughout the Lowcountry. This program is designed to make a deep and lasting impact on the lives of students every year.
The conductor must have a passion for the impact that the intensive study of classical music offers in a young person’s life. This dual role requires a drive for inspiring excellence while embracing the learning process and a passionate belief in creating an inclusive environment and a sense of belonging. The successful person will be actively engaged in growing the program and ensuring its impact on students throughout the Lowcountry.
Mitsuko Flynn, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the CSO, stated, “This supporting leadership role is crucial to our educational initiatives. They will inspire and engage young musicians, create an inclusive learning environment for music-making, and help strengthen one of our cornerstone education programs.”
The CSO identified a need in the Tri-County area for more extracurricular programs that offer high-level musical education for middle and high school students. With very few opportunities for young musicians in the Lowcountry to perform in a symphonic orchestra, the CSO aims to provide an impactful learning experience through orchestral music-making and deep engagement with symphony musicians.
The Charleston Symphony remains committed to supplementing arts programs in schools by providing the highest level of music education and instruction for our community’s youth. The study of music is a fundamental component of any complete education, and the CSO will continue filling this community need through its accessible youth orchestra programs.
