Local Nonprofit to host Inaugural Charity Chili Cook-Off in North Charleston
Community nonprofit I Serve With Joy will premiere their inaugural Chili Cook-Off competition and fundraiser from 1 pm to 5 pm at Sam’s Club, 4900 Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston on Saturday, March 19.
The local nonprofit has been serving joy to the community for the past five years and is now seeking to raise over $10,000 to continue its efforts. Chili lovers will compete for cash prizes, gifts and more judged by local chefs and community leaders in five chili categories: Salsa, Traditional Red, Vegetarian, Bring the Heat and Most Unique. Contributions will go toward hygiene kits for kids, micro baby showers for single parent families and resource support for small nonprofits.
“We are excited to host our very first ever, fun-filled charity fundraiser with a chance at fame, glory and some serious bragging rights for participants all in support of a great cause,” says Executive Director Joy Campbell. “This time last year we had triple the donations to R.E.A.C.H. the underserved. Now with inflation and the ongoing pandemic, it has become challenging to serve. We all have a role to play in strengthening families and our community; and we’re counting on your support.”
Campbell started I Serve With Joy from her grassroots efforts of feeding the homeless and collecting coats for the needy. The nonprofit began by serving a few hundred families and now has served thousands of families by partnering with other nonprofits, vendors and small businesses. This year for the charity chili cook-off, I Serve With Joy has partnered with the North Charleston Police Department, Dr. Thaddeus John Bell, Senator Tim Scott, Bear Paw Creative, Renee Moore Beauty Bar, Trash Gurl, Island Fusion Restaurant and Charleston Good. Other community partners include The Low Country Blessing Box Project and Bundles of Joy.
This anticipated event is presented by South Atlantic Bank, Audio Revolution, Party People Balloons and Designs and Rhino Medical Supply along with Z93 Jamz and 95SX radio stations who will be broadcasting live. Celebrity Chef Carlos Brown and Empowerment Speaker Deya Patterson will emcee while attendees enjoy fun activities such as live music, a photo booth and food trucks. Safety measures will be in place and CDC guidelines will be followed with handwashing stations, hand sanitizer and masks on hand.
The public will also have a chance to taste and vote on the best chili between 20+ competitors vying for the “People’s Choice Award.” General admission tickets are $5 and at the event each voting ticket is $1. In person tickets can be purchased at one of the following local businesses: Renee Moore Beautiful, 3025 Ashley Phosphate Road, North Charleston; CJs Barber and Styling, 1703 Savannah Hwy, Charleston; Brew Coffee, Wine and Craft Beer, 7000 Bowen Pier Dr Suite 1 Hanahan; Happy Nutrition, 1000 Tanner Ford Blvd Unit 350, Hanahan; and North Charleston High School,1087 E Montague Ave, North Charleston.
