Rev. Samuel Green, Jr. to be Honored on National Donor Day 2022
While Valentine’s Day celebrates matters of the heart, it also coincides with National Donor Day, a time to recognize those who have made the selfless decision to help others by saying “YES” to organ, eye, and tissue donation. This year, on February 14, We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) is honoring board member Rev. Samuel Green, Jr. for his role in educating the community on the need and disparities of donation. Rev. Green has proven to be an outstanding advocate for organ, eye, and tissue donation, particularly in the African American community.
More than 106,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting on a life-saving organ transplant. In SC, roughly 1,500 individuals are on the transplant waiting list, more than 60% being African American. The need is great, however, South Carolinians found hope in 2021. In a milestone year of generosity, 831 South Carolina families consented for their loved one to give the gift of life. 221 organ donor heroes, the greatest number of SC legacies than even before, and 356 tissue donor heroes saved and enhanced the lives of many. To put it in perspective, one organ, eye and tissue donor can save eight lives, potentially restore sight for two and improve the lives of 125.
“The impact of organ donation is profound, and we cannot thank Rev. Green enough for his tireless efforts to educate and inspire, normalizing the conversation of donation in the African American community,” said David DeStefano, President/CEO of SHSC. “Organ, eye, and tissue donors, their families, and advocates who say “YES” to this precious gift are the real heroes of South Carolina.”
Members of the South Carolina Senate will honor Rev. Samuel Green Jr.’s selfless efforts with a special proclamation on Tuesday, February 15. Green will be recognized for his advocacy work on behalf of We Are Sharing Hope SC, and the many contributions to both the Charleston community and people of South Carolina.
Rev. Samuel Green, Jr. became a SHSC board member in December 2018. He is based in Columbia, SC where he also serves as the Director of Christian Education for the Seventh Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church.
