The Blood Connection Appoints New Member to Board of Trustees
The Blood Connection has announced the appointment of Ben Abzug (right), of the Charleston RiverDogs, to its Board of Trustees. Abzug will join a 13-member board that helps ensure donor collection and blood processing meet community needs at the highest standards.
“We have a strong leadership foundation in place, and we couldn’t be more pleased to have Ben join our board,” says Heidi Phillips, Board Chairman. “Each of our board members have deep professional backgrounds and a passionate commitment to blood donation. I know Ben will bring a valuable and unique insight to our mission, which will ultimately help us save more lives.”
Ben Abzug, a proud Purdue University alum, has been emersed in the sports world for his entire professional career and is now the Senior Vice President of the Charleston RiverDogs. In that role, he serves as lead sponsorship and ticket sales executive, growing individual sales totals more than 200% in six years. He was awarded the 2019 South Atlantic League Sales Executive of the Year and now leads a team of more than 10 sellers in sponsorship and ticket sales. In addition to helping The Blood Connection plan its blood drives, Abzug drives creative brainstorms to build promotional theme nights and marketing objectives that have garnered national media attention and netted the club national sports awards and significant sponsorship sales opportunities.
Because of Abzug’s leadership, the Charleston RiverDogs team is one of the best partners and blood drive hosts in TBC’s coastal South Carolina region. In 2021, blood drives hosted at the RiverDogs stadium collected around 450 blood donations. That’s an impact on more than 1,300 lives. The RiverDogs began hosting drives with TBC in 2019, and the drives have grown ever since. Abzug is always willing to help when TBC has an emergency need.
“I’ve gotten to know The Blood Connection’s mission and impact since they entered the Charleston market, and I continue to be impressed by the community-centric approach to partnerships and blood collection,” says Abzug. “I’m excited about the opportunity to join the board to help The Blood Connection continue the growth and success that impacts so many lives in the Lowcountry and throughout their service region.”
Abzug will join the board in developing long term strategic priorities to strengthen TBC’s community engagement and foster increased support from community leaders and groups.
