In celebration of Women’s History Month, PEARLS, a film and portrait series, produced by Chynna Chan, will open for public showcase at Julia Deckman Studio (JDS) in James Island, from March 18th through April 5th. JDS and Stono Bottle Shop will host an opening night event scheduled for March 18th, from 5 pm to 8 pm, with the short-film screening at 6:30 pm.

Inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” this series juxtaposes the mysterious identity of the subject behind the frame, by showcasing real women and their authentic stories as masterpieces of their own lives.

“I honestly believe there isn’t a better or more poignant time in our current history for a piece this important,” said Andre Hinds, a local Charleston photographer and PEARLS cinematographer. “This celebration of women of all cultures, colors, and creeds; aurally and visually experiencing the story of their lives, their causes, their loves, their desires, and their humanity so deeply rooted in the commonality and connectivity of being a woman in this world, in and of itself, is art.”

In its whole, the project is not only a call to celebrate the women and matrons who inspire generations of resilience, it is also an ode to the Charleston community and the diversity that makes us a desirable destination.

“This is truly a project created by the community for the community,” said Chynna Chan, producer and director of PEARLS. “We want art- and people-lovers alike to gather, find appreciation, and maybe learn something new about their city and the people who exist here.”

Community remains a common theme running throughout the heart of the project. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will be shared with local nonprofit organizations chosen by each of the women featured.

“As a woman and small business owner, I too understand the tremendous importance of community and was excited to receive such a strong and important proposal,” said Julia Deckman. “I feel privileged to host the culmination of her efforts and can’t wait for our community to experience PEARLS.”
