Tim Lewis Withdraws From First District Congressional Race

Tim Lewis, the Chairman of the Dorchester County Democratic Party, announced today that he is withdrawing from the race for South Carolina’s First Congressional District.

Lewis, a Harleyville native and resident who announced his candidacy on December 16th, 2021, issued the following statement regarding his decision to halt his campaign:

“After lots of soul-searching and serious discussions with my team, I have decided that my bid for a Congressional nomination must close as of today. When I joined this race for the First Congressional District seat, it was with a simple message, ‘We’re Better Together.’ I ran because I remember when neighbors helped each other, and that’s what I feel we should all do again.

I ran because of the families that are worried about finding an affordable home, about the quality of education, about rising health care costs, and about being able to pay their bills. I ran because I care about supporting our seniors, veterans, first responders, and the average blue-collar workers.
The Lowcountry is my home, and all I have ever sought to do was fight to create a government that worked for the working people. As a veteran, I have never run away from a fight, but as a businessman, I know when you need to make a hard choice. That’s why with a heavy heart, I will end my run for Congress. We have built a remarkable grassroots movement and met with voters across SC-01, but family must come first. As a caregiver, I realize I cannot spend the time on the road to flip this district, to win in November, serve in Washington, and fulfill my responsibility at home.

This is not the end of my advocacy. I will stay actively involved, especially here in Dorchester County, and continue to urge our elected officials to address the kitchen table issues that affect everyday families. I encourage the remaining Democratic candidates to focus on these issues, and I look forward to voting for our nominee in November.”
