Helping Seniors Stay Independent In Charleston

Published

on

Charleston is home to nearly 20,000 seniors, many of whom aren’t about to settle down and “act their age” just yet.  While the city is packed with opportunities for hobbies and interests, combined with supportive networks and care options, for many seniors, the goal is to remain independent and active for as long as possible.  From harnessing technology to enable independent living to taking up a new hobby that keeps you out and about, there are plenty of ways to boost your independence as you grow older in this vibrant city.
Optimize your home
A recent survey by AARP shows that 77% of adults aged over 50 wish to stay living at home for as long as they are able to.  Whether you’re enjoying harbour views, a short stroll to shops and restaurants, or convenient access to dog parks and walking trails, you may not feel ready to give that up just yet.  Instead, spend a little time modifying your home for later years, so that it’s comfortable and accessible as you grow older.  By starting sooner, you can budget for it and plan your space so that it’s your choice and your style; plus it gives you longer to enjoy the mod cons.
Boost your body
The CDC recommends that seniors take part in 150 minutes per week of moderately intense activity such as brisk walking, and give two days a week to some form of strength building.  Happily, Charleston’s seniors are ahead of the national average here; a recent study by Clover Health and Wakefield research found that 60% of locals are exercising at least three times a week, compared with 51% nationally.  By focussing on both cardiovascular and strength-building activities, you can protect your heart and respiratory health, among others, and maintain your independence for longer.
Make time for your mind
It is estimated that more than two million American seniors are affected by depression.  Loneliness and isolation can also cause anxiety and reduce cognitive function.  By prioritizing your mental health, you can help to lay a foundation for a happier, healthier later life.  Whether it’s a daily crossword or sudoku puzzle, regular trips to a theatre, library or book club, or taking an art class in one of Charleston’s many creative spaces, find something which you can enjoy engaging with mentally.  It’s also a great way to make friends and build social connections to keep you feeling energized and supported.
If your goal, like so many, is to remain happy in your home for as long as possible, then there are simple steps you can take from now to put yourself in the best possible position.  From simple home modifications, to establishing a strong routine for physical and mental health, you can lay a solid foundation from now.  Charleston is packed with exciting things to do and people to help; embrace your next chapter and set yourself up for an independent, active old age.
