Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum will commemorate the sacrifices of Americans who served in the Vietnam War during a free event on Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29th.

From 10 am to 3 pm in the Vietnam Experience exhibit, several veterans will share stories from their service. Guests can hear first-hand accounts of war and examine the veterans’ personal artifacts and memorabilia. A ceremony at 11:30 am will include a speaker, bagpipe performance, prayer, and a moment of silence.

“Nearly 60,000 Americans lost their lives in the Vietnam War,” said Executive Director Dr. Rorie Cartier. “We want to honor their ultimate sacrifice and celebrate those still with us today. Unfortunately, many of these veterans did not get a hero’s welcome home after the war, and we want to make sure they know we value their service.”

On March 29th, the Vietnam War Veterans Day event will be free to the public. In addition, Vietnam War veterans and their spouses will receive complimentary admission to the entire museum. Other visitors who wish to see the exhibits aboard the USS Yorktown or USS Laffey must purchase admission. Normal parking rates apply.

Patriots Point will also host the Life and Legacy blood drive in partnership with the Blood Connection. From 8 am to 12 pm on March 29th, visitors can honor the legacy of the fallen by donating blood that will save lives at Charleston-area hospitals. All blood donors will receive free parking in the museum lot. Plus, a $20 charitable donation will be made to the USS Yorktown Foundation for every person who donates blood at Patriots Point. This contribution will support the preservation and restoration of museum exhibits. For more information and to make an appointment to donate blood, visit patriotspoint.org.
