Press Release

In celebration of Women’s History Month and in honor of Brookgreen’s founder, Brookgreen Gardens hosted its inaugural Anna Hyatt Huntington Award Luncheon on Thursday, March 10th, to honor two female award recipients in honor of Brookgreen’s founder. Russell Holliday of Charleston and Sam Senig of Coastal Carolina University were recognized as two leaders in the arts community that embody Anna Hyatt Huntington’s philanthropic spirit.

The Anna Hyatt Huntington Woman of Vision Award, presented to Holliday, recognizes a contemporary woman who embodies Anna’s creative and philanthropic spirit and uses her gifts and vision to advance the arts. The Next Generation Award, awarded to Senig, recognizes a college student who uses her creative gifts to make an impact on the community. Senig was also awarded a scholarship to participate in a Master Sculpture Workshop of her choice at Brookgreen and an invitation to participate in the Huntington Legacy Luncheon.

“Anna Hyatt Huntington made vast contributions to the arts community as an artist and art patron, and she was a devoted philanthropist,” says Page Kiniry, president of Brookgreen Gardens. “These two new annual awards are meant to recognize women who continue Anna’s legacy of philanthropy and advancing the arts community, and what better way to honor Anna than to present these awards on 3-in-1 Day, the shared birthdays and wedding day of Anna and her husband.”

Russell Holliday

Russell Holliday is a local philanthropist and arts enthusiast that has been a supporter of Brookgreen Gardens for many years. She served as a trustee from 2005 until 2017, and she committed her time, gifts, and efforts to establish the Russell Holliday Cottage at Brookgreen. Holliday is not an artist herself, but she deeply appreciates art, specifically collecting Southern art, and is committed to its advancement and encouraging others to experience it. A member of one of the oldest families in Horry County, she and her family organize the Galivants Ferry Stump, which has been in existence since 1876 and is the oldest known continuously operating stump speaking event in America. Holliday is also involved in Spoleto Festival USA, the Citadel Foundation, and the Hollings Cancer Center Foundation.

Sam Senig

Sam Senig is a senior at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) double majoring in graphic design and studio art. From the time she was in kindergarten, Sam’s response to what she wanted to be when she grew up was always an artist. She credits her teachers along the way that pushed her to be her best and encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. When she started school at CCU, she knew she wanted to major in graphic design but discovered many other artistic interests as well, including studio art. Senig’s piece, “If You Only Knew,” is on display now at the Florence County Museum. She is currently the president of Chroma, the art and design club on campus, as well as an intern with the Atheneum Press at CCU, where she is designing a kiosk for a Gullah Geechee project that will be on display at Brookgreen.
