Jazz Crawl Productions Announces Weekend of Programming in Return to Charleston
After a four-year hiatus, Jazz Crawl Productions today announced the return of the Jazz Crawl, a three-day series of events, to the Holy City.
Featuring performers and cultural artists from both New Orleans and the Charleston area, the events include a launch party at Charleston City Night Market on Friday, April 8th; a Grand Marshal and Royal Coronation Party at Lo-Fi Brewing Co. on Saturday, April 9th; a Parade Party and costume contest on Sunday, April 10th; and the grand finale Second Line Parade for Charity on Sunday, April 10th, which will close out April’s 2nd Sunday on King Street.
Confirmed New Orleans performers are Big 6 Brass Band, Treme Sidewalker Steppers Grand Marshal Scubble, and Big Chief Jeremy Stephenson & the Monogram Hunters Mardi Gras Indians. Cultural performers and artists from the Charleston area who may be interested in performing during the weekend’s festivities can apply here.
The Parade Party is the official kick-off for the Second Line Parade for Charity and encourages groups to come dressed in themed costumes as Mardi Gras “krewes.” Group participation is strongly encouraged, with discounted ticket packages available here. Attendees can also purchase memorial tributes to lost loved ones, which will be represented during the Memorial Dirge at the Second Line Parade for Charity immediately following the Parade Party. This year’s Parade Party takes place at the Gibbes Museum Garden courtyard and features interactive and educational cultural presentations of music, dance, food, and art from 1 pm to 4 pm, when the party will move to the streets to close out Second Sunday on King.
The Second Line Parade for Charity is a New Orleans-style second line parade through the streets of Downtown Charleston and is the keystone event of Jazz Crawl Productions. This year’s Second Line for Charity Parade will feature Grand Marshal Bill Wilson, a prolific Charleston musician. Wilson will be recognized and celebrated at April 9th’s Royal Coronation party, where the King, Queen, Dukes, and Maids who lead the Second Line Parade for Charity will be chosen. There will be live musical performances and a mini parade.
