Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera Presents Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” at Battery Gadsden
Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera (HALO) continues its inaugural season with Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Utilizing the spectacular architecture of the historic Battery Gadsden on Sullivan’s Island, this Brothers Grimm-inspired musical presents your favorite fairy tale characters with a twist when their classic stories intersect.
“As part of our mission to preserve appreciation for the arts on Sullivan’s Island, Battery Gadsden Cultural Center (BGCC) is thrilled to be able to collaborate with HALO in presenting Stephen Sondheim’s magical musical, Into the Woods,” said W. Michael Walsh, BGCC Board President. “This creative retelling of Grimm’s fairy tales will delight the entire family. Add to that a live orchestra and sets designed by Michael Downs, and this should prove to be one of the most enjoyable events ever presented on the Battery Gadsden ‘stage’.”
Tony Award-winner Ted Sperling directs a cast of Broadway stars including Marina Pires (Aladdin) as the Witch, Brian Calí (Pretty Woman) as the Baker, and Molly Mustonen (The Most Happy Fella) as the Baker’s Wife, alongside Charleston natives Ashley Fabian (Now Again) as Cinderella, and Sam Stevenson (La traviata) as the Steward, and Charleston locals Scott Pattison (This Random World) as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Teresa Elj (Ruthless! The Musical) as the Granny/Giant. Australian-born Music Director Isaac Hayward leads the HALOrchestra
“We are thrilled to continue HALO’s commitment to combining Charleston talent with stars from off,” said Leah Edwards, HALO’s General Director. “Into the Woods is about the magic that happens when individuals on their own paths suddenly cross the paths of those they weren’t expecting. Both fairy tales and theatre bring people together in this way, so the actors telling the story, and the story itself become entwined.”
Patrons are invited to dress in whatever is most comfortable for them, be it their fanciest fairy tale frock or their est out-of-doors outfit.
“Our mission is to engage our community through the arts,” Edwards said. “We don’t want attire to be a barrier. Theatre is everyone’s art form. It tells real, human stories that we can all relate to, and we want everyone to feel welcome to come as they are.”
