Firefly Distillery Shares Sustainability Practices Ahead of Earth Day

With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, Firefly Distillery shared the efforts they have been making toward sustainability and environmentally responsible business practices. From local partnerships using zero-waste straws and 100% glass recycling, to the building materials used to design their new North Charleston facility and implementing composting programs, they’re attempting to keep the environment and sustainability top of mind throughout their daily operations. 

Some of those efforts and results include:

  • 900-lbs. of glass recycled each week

    • In partnership with Fisher Recycling, Firefly says they recycle 100% of their glass, and also doubles as a drop site for the community to recycle their glass bottles

  • Firefly selected Metallic Building Systems as the metal material to construct their 25,000 square foot building

    • This permanent material will last generations and saves on raw materials, energy consumption and CO2 emissions

  • Upcycled barn wood and roof

    • The distillery purchased a teardown barn to recycle the wood to build their internal structures including the wood slatted walls

    • Additionally, they repurposed the roof from the original distillery to build walls, fences, and gates throughout the facility, cutting down on materials and repurposing meaningful pieces

  • 152 recycled bourbon barrels

    • Instead of selling or shipping out used bourbon barrels, the distillery disassembled and used the wood and rings for design features around the distillery including support for their copper bar, sliding doors, and wall decor

  • 95,250 gallons of water saved

    • By using their recycled cooling water system during the distilling process, the distillery saved over 95,000 gallons of water just last year

  • Indoor hydroponic grow house

    • The Distillery is a host site for King Tide Farms, a hydroponic urban farm that practices organic and sustainable methods in growing produce. The distillery sources garnishes from the urban farm and is implementing a composting program to bring it all full-circle.

  • Zero-waste straws

    • In partnership with Holy City Straw Company, the distillery uses only zero-waste straws made from 100% natural wheat and reed plant stems
