Historic Charleston Foundation Celebrates 75th Anniversary and Charter Day This Month
In celebration of their 75th anniversary, the Historic Charleston Foundation is placing commemorative flags on historic houses and businesses around the peninsula. Each property with a 75th Anniversary flag is an easement property, covenant property, a partner, or a Foundation friend; a property that has been impacted by the Foundation in some way.
Beginning on April 28th, you will be able to find a 75thAnniversary flag flying on nearly every street. The flags will remain up through May, which is Preservation Month. The flag represents the Foundation’s impact, their work, and the community that works alongside them every day.
The Foundation will also celebrate Charter Day on Thursday, April 28th with an Awards Ceremony at First Baptist Church to honor individuals and groups who have impacted the historic preservation of the community in some significant way. Followed by a short reception, the Awards Ceremony at 6 pm will grant the following awards:
- Samuel Gaillard Stoney Craftsmanship Award — The Stoney Craftsmanship Award recognizes craftspeople who have kept alive Charleston’s tradition of excellence in the building trades. The Foundation will bestow two Stoney Awards.
- Robert N.S. and Patti Foos Whitelaw Founders Award — The Whitelaw Founders Award recognizes individuals, groups, or government entities that actively engage in the long-term preservation of important buildings and places. The Foundation will recognize four projects.
- The Frances R. Edmunds Award – The Edmunds Award for Historic Preservation is Historic Charleston Foundation’s highest honor. Named for our first director, this award is presented only on very special occasions to recognize exceptional personal achievement in the field of historic preservation and service to the principles embodied in the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation will award one special recipient.
