Mayor John Tecklenburg Announces National Day of Prayer Charleston Observance
Mayor John Tecklenburg today announced the National Day of Prayer Charleston Observance set for 9:15 am on Thursday, May 5th, 2022, at Westminster Presbyterian Church located at 1157 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard in West Ashley.
Similar observances are expected nationwide on Thursday in accordance with a 1952 joint resolution by Congress signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, and a 1988 amended law signed by President Ronald Reagan designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer.
“Everyone is invited to attend this uplifting event on Thursday as our nation and city unite in a day of national prayer and fellowship,” said Mayor Tecklenburg.
At the event, Mayor Tecklenburg will give the official “Call to Observance” for the one-hour service which will be open to the public. Also at the event, Westminster pastor and associate pastor, Rev. Dr. Daniel Smoak and Rev. Melissa Long, respectively, will welcome attendees and give the “Call to Worship.”
The service will open with a Presentation of Colors and Pledge of Allegiance led by City Assistant Fire Chief Dr. David Griffin and a joint honor guard of the Police and Fire departments. Julia P. Copeland, Esq., City Deputy Corporation Counsel will perform the National Anthem with organ accompaniment by Robin Zemp, Westminster Director of Music.
Prayers centered on such subjects as faith and fellowship, health and wellness, human rights and social justice, economic prosperity, and peace in the Ukraine will be given by six area clergy including: Rev. Lucio Collins, Iglesia de Dios Johns Island; Rev. Rebecca Hinds, Unitarian Church in Charleston; Rev. Dr. Marion Platt III, Star Gospel Mission; Rev. Rich Robinson, Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy; Rev. Chris Russo, Seacoast Church West Ashley; and Rev. Dr. William Swinton Jr., Ebenezer AME.
To close the service City Police Chief Luther Reynolds will render a prayer for public safety followed by Copeland singing “God Bless America” and the Benediction by Rev. Dr. Smoak.
