Charleston Moves Shares Details on Upcoming Bridge Adventure Ride and Ride of Silence
On May 15th and May 18th, the community is invited to join Charleston Moves for two critical mass bicycle rides, with police-escorts, to demonstrate support for safe, connected and equitable multi-modal access over Charleston’s rivers.
The Bridge Adventure Ride is on Sunday, May 15th. Participants can take part in an 8.5 mile ride covering sections of the peninsula, West Ashley, and James Island, including the Ashley River Bridges and Wappoo Cut Bridge. Charleston Moves says this event will serve as a celebration for the progress on the new Ashley River Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, while also highlighting the need to address an equitable Wappoo Cut crossing.
The route will focus on destinations and pending improvements on either side of the bridges, including a stop at the historic riverfront of McLeod Plantation for a brief interpretation of the Wappoo Creek as a “gateway to the world.” The event will begin and end at Taco Boy downtown; participants must arrive and check in by 11 am. The public is encouraged to stop by Taco Boy after the ride to engage in Charleston Moves’ action items and demonstrate support for their advocacy. 10% of the group’s purchases will benefit the nonprofit. Riders are encouraged to RSVP and sign the waiver in advance, but can sign in at Taco Boy, 10:30 am, the day of the event.
The Ride of Silence is on Wednesday, May 18th. Charleston Moves says this year’s 7.6-mile route serves as an important benchmark for the Better North Bridge project. Over the last two years, Charleston has lost several community members due to accidents on the North Bridge. This event will honor these community members, and the many more who have been killed while riding a bike, while highlighting recent efforts to provide safe access for all.
The ride will begin and end at Frothy Beard Brewing Company in West Ashley; participants must arrive and check in by 6 pm. The public is encouraged to stop by Frothy Beard after the ride to engage in Charleston Moves’ action items and demonstrate support for their advocacy. Riders are encouraged to RSVP and sign the waiver in advance, but can sign in at Frothy Beard, 5:30 pm, the evening of the event.
